Welcome to the Shorinji Kempo Berlin eV!

Shorinji Kempo is a Japanese martial art. Martial arts, which trains both body and mind, and is supported by a vibrant, open, and friendly community. We see true strength in being able to help oneself and others. The focus is on mutual growth through training together, without a competitive mindset.

So Doshin Shorinji Kempo was founded in Japan in 1947. His goal was to instill self-confidence and a humanistic value system in the people of post-war Japan. Today, Shorinji Kempo is a discipline practiced worldwide (under the umbrella of the WSKO), the effective martial art bzw. Kampfsport mit der Philosophie des Zen Buddhism connects.

What to expect in training

Training focuses on basic movements and complex partner techniques that incorporate elements of traditional Japanese and Chinese self-defense forms. The emphasis is on the ability to neutralize attacks, even from physically superior opponents, in a controlled manner.

Shorinji Kempo training can be divided into four equally important parts:

Kihon (The basics)

Kihon encompasses the training of fundamental individual movements such as punches, kicks, blocks, and footwork, in order to transform these from conscious to instinctive movement patterns. It forms the fundamental repertoire upon which all other techniques of Shorinji Kempo are built.

Hōkei (The forms)

The techniques, or Hōkei, in Shorinji Kempo are fixed movement patterns based on the fundamentals of Kihon and the understanding of physical principles, distance (Maai) and opportunities (Kikai) in combination with a partner. Hōkei serves as a tool to practically experience the core philosophical concepts of Shorinji Kempo.

Randori / Unyōhō (Die Anwendung)

Randori is the method of applying learned knowledge from Kihon and Hōkei under realistic conditions to test strategies and close technical gaps. The focus is not on defeating the opponent, but on personal development and mutual growth.Jita Kyōraku).

Embu (Partner Demonstration)

In Embu, two partners create a dynamic sequence of techniques, with attacker and defender fluidly switching roles to demonstrate the seamless connection of individual movements. It hones precision and the ability to react to various attacks without pause and with maximum control.
Kenshi, the practitioners of Shorinji Kempo, also compete with Embu in national and international competitions, where they are evaluated according to various criteria.

Our techniques can be roughly divided into three parts:

  • Goho („Hard“ Techniques): Dynamic punches, kicks and blocks
  • Juho („soft“ techniques): Escapes, levers, throws and holds
  • Seiho (healing techniques): Massage and acupressure techniques
